The Scotsman newspaper was first published in Edinburgh on 25 January 1817. Although the railway network expanded during the 1840s, few newspapers initially used railways for distribution because of high freight charges. This changed in 1855 when stamp duty on advertising and newspapers was abolished. The owners of The Scotsman then reached an agreement with Scottish railway companies, under which they paid the carriage fees themselves, effectively creating a railway distribution monopoly for the paper. Circulation quickly increased as it became available across most of Scotland, reaching around 40,000 copies per day by the early 1870s.

This growth in circulation and profits encouraged more effective use of the railway network for distribution. The publishers entered into an agreement with the North British Railway to provide an early morning newspaper express service, using dedicated vans to carry freshly printed copies from Edinburgh at 04:00 to Glasgow for onward distribution on the first morning trains. As circulation continued to grow, an additional newspaper express was introduced in 1899 to carry the paper to Hawick each morning, connecting with the 06:00 passenger train to Riccarton. This enabled towns in the north of England, including Hexham, Langholm, Carlisle, and Newcastle, to receive early deliveries, further increasing circulation.

The Scotsman special newspaper expresses ran for more than 70 years between Edinburgh and Glasgow, with the last service operating around the mid-1940s under the LNER, and the nature of the operation changed little during that time. Each morning, bundles of newspapers leaving the presses at 04:00 were taken to Edinburgh’s Waverley station and loaded onto twelve dedicated “Special Express” carriages in Scotsman livery. During the journey, packers assembled individual parcels for each destination, which were thrown out at stations along the route. At these intermediate stops, the train slowed to around 10 mph to allow parcels to land safely on the platform.

Under the LNER, the dedicated newspaper vans were repainted from North British Railway Coach Lake into the familiar LNER painted teak body finish, with the ends painted black after 1925. The solebar and Mansell wheel centres also received the painted teak finish, while the running gear was painted black. Panel lining followed standard LNER practice in primrose yellow, and The Scotsman’s heraldic banner appeared on both sides, with thistle emblems at each end of the van.

Gentle Oil for After Hair Removal Care
I started using this Cyperus oil after shaving because my skin often feels dry afterward. The texture is lightweight and spreads easily, so I only need a small amount on areas like legs and underarms. I usually apply it after showering, when my skin is clean and dry, then massage it in for a few minutes. The oil feels soothing and gives my skin a softer, more moisturized feeling without being too greasy. It absorbs better than I expected, especially when I use a thin layer. The scent is mild and does not bother me during daily use. For unwanted hair care, I know it is not something that shows a big change overnight, so I use it consistently after hair removal. It has been easy to add into my routine, and I like that it helps calm and moisturize my skin after shaving or waxing.

Skincare and Hair Care Experience with This Cyperus Rotundus Oil
This cyperus rotundus oil has a lightweight texture with good fluidity, it absorbs quickly when applied to the face, leaving no greasy or heavy feeling, even for combination-oily skin, I mainly use it for facial moisturizing and body care, after washing my face, I warm 2-3 drops in my palms and press it into my skin, and it doesn’t cause pilling when applying makeup afterward, leaving my skin soft and smooth, for hair care, after using it consistently for a month, the hair on my underarms and limbs has become finer, and the growth rate has slowed down significantly, so I don’t need to remove hair frequently, my skin also doesn’t get rough from frequent shaving, there’s no stinging or burning sensation during use, making it safe for sensitive skin, and the light aloe scent is fresh and pleasant, the dropper design is convenient, allowing precise dosage control to avoid waste, in addition to face and body, I also use it for scalp care, after washing my hair, I massage a few drops into my scalp, which relieves dryness and makes my hair smoother and shinier, overall, it delivers noticeable results for both skincare and hair care, with a comfortable user experience.

Absorbs into the skin well and no irritation so far
I bought this Cyperus Rotundus oil to try out, and the 1.85 oz bottle is a good size for me. The oil has a light botanical scent that is pleasant and not too strong. I have applied it a few times and found that it is very easy to use with the included dropper. It absorbs into the skin well and I have noticed no irritation at all, which is important for my daily routine. The bottle arrived quickly and was packaged securely so there were no leaks. It is a practical addition to my shelf, and the glass container feels solid. This product does exactly what it says on the label and provides a straightforward way to use a natural oil. It is a functional and simple purchase that meets my needs perfectly.

Smooth skin without the post-shave itch
I’ve always had issues with my skin feeling super irritated after I shave my legs, so I started applying this Cyperus Rotundus oil right after hopping out of the shower. The quality of the blend is impressive—it’s got jojoba and almond oil too, so it feels very nourishing rather than just sitting on top of the skin. It absorbs quickly enough that I can put on my leggings and head to the gym without feeling like a greaseball. The functionality as a hair inhibitor is a nice bonus. I’ve noticed the hair on my shins seems to be coming back a bit softer and less stubbly than before. For a 55 ml bottle, the value for money is solid since you only need a few drops to cover a large area. It’s a great find for anyone who deals with that annoying sandpaper feeling a day after waxing. My roommate even started using it on her arms because it’s fragrance-free and doesn't mess with her perfume.

Lightweight oil that fits into a simple routine
I started using this oil as part of my regular skincare routine, mainly applying it to areas like my arms and face after showering. The texture feels light and spreads easily without leaving a heavy residue. I noticed it absorbs fairly quickly, which makes it convenient for daily use. It also has a mild scent that is not overwhelming. I like that it includes plant based ingredients, and it leaves my skin feeling soft after application.
